COLOMBO (News 1st); The issue of cooking the purchased food bought after tremendous hardship has become another issue due to the gas shortage in Sri Lanka. Commercialised urban hotspots are the worst hit due to this crisis. Added to the woes of the people, long queues for kerosene is a common sight and most places have run out. News 1st visited several households in Colombo and inquired as to how they prepare their meals. Many people were seen using wood stoves with the greatest difficulty with firewood being scarce in the city and double the time being wasted to cook. All because there is no gas or kerosene. Yet another heavily affected group are the people living in flats because there is no place to light wood stoves and neighbouring flat owners are subject to be inconvenienced. Some people in the city have been eating from outside for weeks as they are unable to light a wood stove in their living conditions. Some lucky ones were able to cook on kerosene stoves after standing for long hours to buy the fuel. Most of these people have kept their jobs at stake to undertake the duties of standing in the kerosene queue to taste a home-cooked meal. Meanwhile, Gas cylinders weren't supplied to the market on Tuesday (28) as well. Consumers had to wait in queues since early morning to purchase gas. According to our reporters, some people have been standing in line for 3 days by taking leave from their workplaces. An annoyed consumer in Matara said, at a time where there is not even bread to eat politicians are visiting Thirupathi and the people voted for them to develop the country rather than putting pressure on them. In Galle, a consumer told that the people themselves are to blame as this is what happens when the public sends certain people to Parliament without thinking twice. People were seen all over the island standing in queues with disappointed looks. '' The rulers of the country must understand the problems of the people. I hope that they realize the woes of the people. May they be blessed with a sense of humanity. Many deaths were reported from gas explosions. What did they do? They didn't do anything. Did they take legal action against any company? We are not protected '' an aggrieved consumer said.
