Four officers shot dead by Sergeant on duty

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Police Media Spokesman's Office states that four officers attached to the Thirukkovil Police Station have been shot dead by a Police Sergeant, who was on duty.

An OIC and three other officers of the Thirukkovil Police Station who were injured in the shooting have been admitted to the Ashraff Memorial Hospital in Kalmunai and the Akkaraipattu Base Hospital, he stated.

The Police Sergeant had shot several rounds after forcibly taking the gun of the officer who was on duty at the main gate of the  Thirukkovil Police Station last night (24).

The deceased have been identified as a Police Sergeant and three Police Constables, including a driver. 

However, the police sergeant who fired the shots had surrendered to the Athimale Police Station, located about 80 km from the Thirukkovil Police station, along with two T-56 assault rifles and 19 rounds of ammunition used in the shooting.

The Athimale Police has arrested the suspect and had handed the relevant person over to Ampara Police for further investigations.
