Court prevents People's Bank from auctioning property of COVID affected rice businessman

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo District Court on Tuesday (21) issued an injunction order on People's Bank preventing any attempt to auction the property of a rice businessman from Galnewa, who faced an economic crisis due to COVID-19.

The order was made after considering an application that was filed with the court noting that People's Bank was attempting to auction the property on the 30th of December, in direct violation of the circular issued by the Central Bank to provide relief to businessmen who have been affected by COVID-19.

The application was filed by businessman Sanjeewa Wijesundara via his counsel Aruna Ranasinghe.

Chief District Judge Aruna Aluthge considering the submissions ordered People's Bank to present facts in court on the 4th of January 2021.
