Release US $ to import sugar, importers make appeal from Minister

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sugar importers have requested the State Minister for Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna to release the required amount of dollars to banks to import sugar.

Nihal Seneviratne, the Vice President of the Sugar Importers' Association stated that by doing so, it will be possible to regularize the importation of sugar and give it a controlled price.

He also said that he had discussed the matter with the Minister and the Sugar Importers Association yesterday (27) afternoon.

Although a control price has been set for sugar, most stores do not sell sugar at the relevant set price.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) recently set a control price of Rs. 122 for a kilogram of white sugar and Rs. 125 for a kilogram of brown sugar.
