Protest in Kaduwela over suspicious death of suspect in police custody

COLOMBO (News 1st); A protest was held by Kaduwela area residents over an incident where a suspect died while being held under Kaduwela Police custody recently. The demonstrators marched opposite the Kaduwela Police at 09:00 a.m. today (22). The deceased was arrested on 17th August over a chain-snatching incident, however, the 24-year old suspect had passed away two days later while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. Relatives of the suspect alleged that the death is suspicious. The father of the deceased is demanding justice, inquiring as to why his son was killed, while the wife of the deceased also alleges that the suspect was attacked and killed by Kaduwela Police. Assistant Superintendent of Police Hemantha Ovitigala visited the location and engaged in a discussion with the protestors, after which the group dispersed.
