COLOMBO (News 1st): It is reported that hundreds of dead fish have washed up on the banks of the Kurunegala Wewa. Residents say around 200 fish die on a daily basis, and some people even collect the dead fish and sell it at markets. The locals also stated that this phenomenon has been occurring within the past week. " Normally you can collect about 2-3 baskets of dead fish, and all these dead fish are of the same kind.  Hundreds of fish wash up on the banks every day, especially after the rain. " The residents said. Residents of the area say that the dead fish are collected on a daily basis by the employees of the Kurunegala Municipal Council. When News 1st inquired about the issue from the Kurunegala Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa, he said that several samples from the lake have already been collected and sent to labs. The lab reports have determined that the fish deaths are increasing due to the density of fish in the wewa and algae within the wewa. However, the residents of Kurunegala do not need to have any undue fears about consuming water as water is not currently being supplied from the wewa to the residents.
