COLOMBO (News 1st): A large number of archaeological relics have been discovered in the Kithulkotta area in Thanamalwila.
Accordingly, excavations conducted by the Department of Archeology, Postgraduate Institute of Archeology of the University of Kelaniya, headed by Dr. Dananjaya Gamlath has uncovered several relics near a ruined stupa.
Dr. Gamlath said that a stupa is believed to be constructed in accordance with the Mahayana tradition in the 6th and 8th centuries and was looted by treasure hunters several decades ago.
He added that several artefacts were discovered, including ones which are made of clay, several pieces of a pinnacle, and bricks with ancient characters upon them.
