Spike in cases of cruelty against children

76 sectors of employment listed as dangerous for children - NCPA

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka's National Child Protection Authority has listed 76 sectors of employment as dangerous for children to be employed under any circumstances.

NCPA Chairman Professor Muditha Vidanapathirana speaking to News 1st said the list will be converted to the law in Sri Lanka.

He said teenagers between the ages of 16 & 18 are often employed in these listed sectors and it will be prohibited following discussion with the necessary stakeholders.

He said children cannot be employed as domestic aides in the future.

In addition, the National Child Protection Authority said it received 4,740 complaints with respect to incidents of cruelty against children during the first 06 months of 2021.

There was a spike in such incidents on June 2021, he stressed.

Furthermore, State Minister Piyal Nishatha said raids will be carried out across the island with regard to children being used as domestic aides.
