Navy seizes Kerala cannabis worth Rs. 39 million in Kayts

COLOMBO (News 1st); A Special search operation conducted by the Navy in the beach area of Karampan, Kayts on 17th June 2021 led to the seizure of about 130kg and 760g of Kerala cannabis, a dinghy, and the apprehension of 02 suspects.

The Navy has stepped up patrols in island waters to crack down on a wide range of nefarious activities including trafficking of drugs by sea.

During a similar operation, the Northern Naval Command managed to make this apprehension where a suspicious dinghy that approached the Karaampan beach was searched and 04 packages containing Kerala cannabis (about 130kg and 760g) were found in it.

Apart from that, the dinghy and 02 suspects aboard were also taken into naval custody.

The street value of the seized consignment of Kerala cannabis is believed to be over Rs. 39 million.

The operation was conducted adhering to COVID-19 protocols in place for the prevention of the pandemic and the suspects held in it were identified as residents of Pesalai and Kayts, aged 26 and 31.

The accused along with the haul of narcotics and the dinghy were handed over to the Kayts Police for onward legal action.
