1390 Quarantine law-breakers arrested in 24-hours: Police

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Police arrested a record 1,390 people for the violation of quarantine regulations such as wearing face masks and maintaining social distances in a 24-hour window that ended on Friday morning (Jun. 18).

Accordingly, 38,311 people have so far been arrested for the violation of quarantine regulations since the 30th of October last year, Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st.

Of the 1,390 arrested on Thursday (Jun. 17), 172 were arrested in Kuliyapitiya, 121 were arrested in the Kandy division, and 133 were arrested in the Matale police division.

According to the Deputy Police Chief, 6,797 people were inspected at 14 checkpoints located at the Exit and Entry points of the Western Province; 108 people who were trying to cross the provincial borders in violation of the inter-provincial travel restriction, were turned away.

“Special mobile and surveillance operations will be conducted across the country, during the weekend. Police Officers will be deployed in civil attire to apprehend the violators of the quarantine rules and regulations,” DIG Ajith Rohana further noted.

Moreover, a special drone operation will be conducted in Colombo city and its suburbs.
