Indian variant of COVID-19 detected for the first time from Colombo

COLOMBO (News 1st);  The Delta or the Indian variant of COVID-19 was detected from samples obtained from Colombo, said Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura on Thursday (16). 

“An usual outbreak was detected in the Aramaya place, Colombo 9 (samples which were not giving the S drop, which is characteristically seen with the alpha variant with the Taqpath qRT-PCR). Therefore, 9 samples from this area, with other samples from other areas of CMC, Karapitiya and Batticaloa were sequenced,” said a statement from the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura.

Delta (B.1.617.2/Indian variant) was detected in all 5 samples obtained from Aramaya place, Colombo 09
B.1.1.7 (alpha/UK variant) was detected in Karapitiya, Batticaloa, Colombo 06, Colombo 08, and Colombo 10.
