COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector in its entirety would collapse if the existing fertilizer shortage is not addressed, warned experts.
At the same time, farmers from across multiple areas have continued to demand fertilizer to ensure their crops do not die.
Prof. J. Weerahewa from the Department of Agricultural Economics and Business Management Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya warned that Sri Lanka’s agricultural produce could drop by 30% and this could lead to a serious issue in the country.
“Prices of crops could increase as a result of this,” she said noting that it would lead to a situation where Sri Lanka will have to spend huge sums of money to import food to meet the local demand.
