COLOMBO (News1st): The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has expressed its concerns with regard to the importance of maintaining the freedom of speech and expression, right to comment and criticise in a democratic society.
The association highlighted the importance of ensuring that authorities do not use laws to stifle genuine expressions of dissent and criticism.
This statement was issued after the recent media release from Sri Lanka Police stating people who spread fake news, photographs, videos will be arrested.
The statement states that the association have deep concerns with regard to the rationale used by the authorities in determining what falls into the category of ‘fake news’ and on the factors considered in arresting and detaining individuals on these charges.
