One arrested for Procuration and Human Trafficking of a minor

COLOMBO (News 1st): Mount Lavinia Police arrested a 35-year-old suspect in connection with the offences of procuration and human trafficking of a 15-year-old girl, Sri Lanka Police said. "Upon receiving information about a case of procuration and human trafficking of a 15-year-old girl, the Headquarters Inspector of Mount Lavina had appointed a special team to conduct investigations," Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st on Wednesday (Jun. 09). According to the Deputy Police Chief, based on the investigation, the information had come to light that the perpetrator had published various advertisements on social media and sold the girl to third parties for a period of 03-months. "Thereafter, he had collected money from third parties and the particular business was conducted at an apartment situated in the Mount Lavinia area," the Police Spokesperson elaborated. According to Sri Lankan law, procuration is an offence and human trafficking is also listed as an offences in terms of the Amendments made to the Penal Code in 1995 and 2006. The 35-year-old suspect was placed in remand custody until the 08th of June, after being produced at the Moratuwa Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (Jun. 08). "Police are conducting further investigations to trace the third parties who bought the girl for sexual activities. We are taking stern action against the perpetrators in due course," Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana stressed.
