Sub-Inspector dies following fatal hit & run in Matale

COLOMBO (News 1st); 05 people died as a results of motor accidents on Saturday (15), said Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana on Sunday (16), adding 04 deaths were the result of accidents that took place earlier in the week.

On the 11th of May 2021, an accident had taken place in Balakaduwa in Matale when a van from Dambulla to Akurana ran over a Police Sub-Inspector at a road-block, and he succumbed at the ICU of the Kandy Hospital on Saturday (15), said the Police Spokesperson.

The Police Sub-Inspector was identified as 52-year-old Asoka Upathissa from Matale with a service of 30-years in Sri Lanka Police.

He was attached to the Special Crimes Investigations Bureau of the Matale Police.

The driver of the van who is a 29-year-old male was arrested and remanded for causing a hit-and-run, said the Police Spokesperson adding fresh charges will be filed against the driver for causing the death of the Sub-Inspector.
