COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Police arrested 238 people for the failure to follow quarantine regulations such as wearing face masks and maintaining social distances, during a 24-hour window that ended on Thursday morning (May 06). Since 30th October 2020, to date, 5486 people have been arrested so far, for the violation of quarantine regulations, Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st. According to the Deputy Police Chief, of those arrested, charges were filed against 5400 people. The special gazette notification in respect of COVID-19 quarantine regulations was published on the 15th of November 2020, and the provisions of the gazette notification were enforced on 30th October 2020. Whilst emphasizing that quarantine operations will be conducted continuously, DIG Ajith Rohana urged the people to follow COVID-19 health regulations. "Furthermore, based on the new COVID-19 guidelines issued by the Director-General of Health Services, parties, events, and seminars are prohibited as per the circular dated 01st May 2021; violators will be dealt with the law" the Deputy Police Chief emphasized.
