COLOMBO (News1st): State minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana has said that the UK virus mutant had not been detected in tests when warnings were first issued over the matter.

Jayasumana told reporters that the Department of Immunology at the University of Sri Jayawardenapura had notified that five individuals had contracted the virus containing a strain not detected before in Sri Lanka.

“When it was notified, intelligence units identified even the third contacts and collected 800 samples. None of the 800 tested positive for the virus,” Jayasumana noted.

He claimed:  “Just because a mutation is detected, it cannot be classified as the UK strain”.
