Highway troublemakers granted bail: Police

COLOMBO (News 1st): The five people arrested by Highway Traffic Police Division in connection with multiple traffic violations committed on 10th April 2021 along the Southern Expressway were granted bail, Sri Lanka Police said on Thursday (Apr. 22). The five were initially remanded till today (Apr. 22) after being produced before the Magistrate's Court. "The suspects were released on Rs. 500,000 personal bail by the Magistrate after the case was taken up today (22), Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st. The five arrested included the driver of the vehicle and four passengers. According to DIG Ajith Rohana, the driver had committed the offences of neglectful driving and reckless driving, while the four passengers had committed offences under the Penal Code such as wrongful restraint, and certain offences committed under the National Thoroughfares Act, No. 40 of 2008. Charges were framed against the original owner of the vehicle who is a resident of Peradeniya Road, Kandy; he was fined Rs. 5,000 by the court for not following the proper procedure in registering vehicles, the Deputy Police Chief further noted.
