Colombo (News 1st); Sri Lanka plans to introduce new legislation to prevent the spread of false information via social media, announced Justice Minister Ali Sabry on Sunday (18).
‘Singapore, Malaysia and India have already introduced ‘The Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act’ to empower a legal regime to combat the spread of false information,’ said the Justice Minister adding 17% of profiles of social activists in Sri Lanka are fake profiles.
The Justice Minister went on to say that is impossible to file legal action against them because they spread false information using fake accounts.
Minister Ali Sabry said there is posts circulating which make the people disappointed on the country and therefore the cabinet of minister is already discussing means of introducing new legislation in order to combat such online falsehood.
