COLOMBO (News 1st): Several protests took place across the island surrounding the environment, as well as long-standing issues faced by farmers. Ven. Medirigiriye Siki Thero commenced a march from Kandy to Presidential Secretariat against environmental destruction and the need for a solution for the wild elephant issue. The thero arrived at Kegalle on the first day of the march. This was in addition to the protest by residents of Galgamuwa, who demand a scientific solution to the wild elephant issue that has been plaguing them. Meanwhile, the protest launched by farmers of the Walsapugala area seeking the proposed wild elephant management reserve to be gazetted is continuing for the 65th day. The Inter-University Students' Federation also extended their support to the farmers today. The satyagrahas by farmers in Medawachchiya and Mahiyanganaya also carried out the 4th and 6th days of their protest which they are carrying out in support of satyagraha carried out by farmers in Walsapugala.
