COLOMBO (News 1st): A tense situation between protestors and the Police arose during a campaign march for women’s rights organized by the Women’s Movement for Freedom today.

The protestors were en route from Maradana Junction at 2 pm to the Presidential Secretariate.

Tensions between protestors and Police escalated as the group arrived through the Lotus road to the roundabout close to the Presidential Secretariat.

National Organizer of the Women’s Movement for Freedom, Hemamali Abeyratne said, they organised the protest in order to protect the rights of working women who go through hardships in the country, from women who suffer in the Middle East to women working in garment factories to women working in estate plantations.

”our sisters were attacked by the Police in this country in a manner that does not happen in any other country” she alleged.
