COLOMBO (News 1st): A special meeting will be held today (Mar. 02) between Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Vice-Chancellors of universities, the University Grants Commission said.
The meeting will be held at 5:00 pm on Tuesday evening (Mar. 02) at the Temple Trees, Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission told News 1st.
Prof. Amaratunga pointed out that given the increase in the number of students enrolled at universities, the allocations granted for the functioning of universities are insufficient.
According to the UGC Chairman, the number of existing buildings at universities is also not sufficient and thereby, special attention will be paid to these issues during today’s discussion.
For the first time, an extra 10,600 students have been enrolled to universities this year.
The total number of students enrolled in universities this year has risen to 42,000, UGC Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunga noted.
