Colombo (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s law enforcement agencies seized over 1,610 kilograms of heroin in 2020 alone, said Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana.

The main busts are as follows:

22nd January 2020 170 kg
29th February 2020 74 kg
05th March 2020 365 kg
12th March 2020 99 kg
14th May 2020 225 kg
12th October 2020 15 kg

33,125 suspects were arrested in 2020 for heroin possession while 1,400 were arrested for the possession of synthetic drugs.

In total 61,550 people were arrested for drug possession in 2020, said the Police Spokesperson.

The Deputy Police Chief said intel suggests there is a shortage of heroin in the Sri Lankan drug market due to continuous raids carried out by law enforcement.

This had led to a rise in the use of synthetic drugs such as ICE, he added.

Sri Lanka Police had obtained INTERPOL Red Notices against 24 drug traffickers who are in hiding overseas.

01 of them had died recently, said the Police Spokesperson.
