COLOMBO (News 1st): A demerit points system will be introduced soon in a bid to curtail traffic accidents, Sri Lanka Police said on Friday (Feb. 19). "We are going to introduce the demerit points system in order to curtail road traffic accidents. According to our legislative system, we have the law in respect of demerit points system, but infrastructure should be developed accordingly," Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st. The move comes amidst 15 fatalities due to road traffic accidents being reported in a 24-hour window that ended on Friday morning (Feb. 19). According to Police, this is the highest number of fatalities recorded due to road accidents in the recent past. "We are in the process of developing the infrastructure in order to introduce the demerit points system as early as possible," the Deputy Police Chief noted. Furthermore, Sri Lanka Police will conduct special traffic operations to monitor the situation relating to road accidents, DIG Ajith Rohana emphasized.
