COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Customs has launched an investigation into the importation of vehicles to the country under the guise of spare parts, Customs officials said on Wednesday (Feb. 10). The investigation was launched after four freight containers imported to the country in February 2020 were opened at the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), where it was revealed that of the four containers, three contained nine vehicles including luxury KDH vans. According to Sri Lanka Customs, the other container contained vehicle engines and other spare parts. The Customs investigation will focus on whether more vehicles were imported to the country under the guise of spare parts in addition to the nine vehicles that were discovered. The containers were imported by a Vehicle Assembly Plant in Minuwangoda, Sri Lanka Customs said. Further investigations will be conducted upon presenting facts in court.
