Colombo (News 1st); A suspect connected to multiple robberies was injured when police opened fire in Welewatte, Wellampitiya.

Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said the Wellampitiya Police carried out an operation to arrest a four-member gang responsible for multiple chain snatching thefts.

When police visited the location to arrest one member of a gang, officers were compelled to use firearms on the resistance of the suspect, who later suffered injuries to his leg, said the Police Spokesperson

The 34-year-old suspect is not in critical condition, he said adding the suspect is well know criminal in Wellampitiya.

Further investigations are underway to arrest the other suspects in the gang.
