COLOMBO (News1st): Opposition parliamentarian Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has criticized moves to handover the Colombo Port's East Container Terminal to foreign entities. "The government came into power by pledging that national resources won't be sold," Fonseka told parliament. He pointed out that the East Container Terminal can push the Colombo Port to the 15th position globally from its existing 25th position. "The Colombo Port receives 7.2 million containers annually. If the East Container Terminal is constructed, this can be increased up to 10 million containers," the opposition parliamentarian noted. He recalled that the government, in the run-up to the election, had pledged to refrain from allowing foreign entities to meddle with domestic matters. "...now they are frightened before another country," Fonseka argued.
