Heavy rains inundate homes in Kantale

COLOMBO (News1st): At least 50 houses have been inundated in Kantale due to heavy rains experienced in the area, authorities said. Residents mainly attribute the flooding to the lack of a proper drainage system. Several shops in the Kantale down were also damaged after a banyan tree had collapsed due to heavy winds and showers. Two sluice gates of the Minneriya reservoir were opened by six inches each following heavy rains in the Polonnaruwa district. The excess water is released into the Kaudulla Lake at a rate of 300 cubic feet per second.
