MAHARA PRISON RIOTERS TO BE PROSECUTED

Colombo (News 1st); The Sri Lankan Department of Prisons will file legal action against 120 prisoners who took part in last year's riot at the Mahara Prison causing serious damage to property.
The prisoners will be charged as per the provisions of the Public Property Act.
Prisons Spokesperson & Commissioner Chandana Ekanayake said 116 of them are remand prisoners and the remaining 04 are incarcerated, inmates.
The 2020 riot at the Mahara Prison resulted in Rs. 60 million in property damage, he added.
25 prisoners who spearheaded the riots were identified, he said.
The infirmary, archives, and several other buildings were damaged in the Mahara Prison Riot.
