Colombo (News 1st); 23 Trade unions from the Ports Authority, The National Organizations collective and a large number of civil organizations joined the formation of a new national movement named the ‘Movement to protect the East Container Terminal’.

Chairman of the Port’s Sri Lanka Nidahas Sewaka Sangamaya Prassana Kalutharage stated the trade unions that helped form this government are now united in the fight against these actions.

Chairman of the Deshaya Surakimu National Organization Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thero stated that the port is like a piece of property that is owned by the Sangha, adding that ‘it cannot be touched’. He further added that at times he wonders if they voted and brought to power an auction company.

Speaking directly to the Government, the Ven. Thero stated “Don’t try to make foreign countries smile while bringing a tear to the eyes of all Sri Lankans.”

Prof. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan, the Chairman behind the Committee to look into the MCC agreement stated that the Government had “no moral or legal right to sell off or lease the Colombo Port to a foreign country” after “coming into power with a mandate against selling off assets of our country.”
