COLOMBO (News1st): Inciting racism will have long-term repercussions despite bringing short-term "political benefits", an opposition lawmaker said Friday. "Some members of the government are acting to stir up racism. That is evident," Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Jathika Jana Balawegaya leader told Parliament. He argued that the government is stoking racism by cremating the bodies of Muslims who die of COVID-19, despite heavy objection as it goes against their faith. "We must first admit that this decision can cause shock among the Muslim community," Dissanayake stressed. The JJB leader insisted that a scientific approach must be adopted to resolve this issue by understanding the effect it can have on the community. "This is a very sensitive problem," he pointed out. Dissanayake observed that the government has ignored requests of Muslim lawmakers on this problem, although they had supported the 20th amendment recently.
