COLOMBO (News 1st): Development of the Kankesanthurei Port will commence in early 2021, Chairman of the Ports Authority Retired General Daya Ratnayake confirmed. Development work of the Port will thereafter be complemented within two years.

The Kankesanthurai Port is to be restored utilizing funds received from loans worth $45 million, obtained from the Exim Bank of India. The loan is to be repaid within a period of 20 years.

The breakwater of the Port will be restored as the first phase of the project.

” Our main hope is to develop the existing Kankesanthurai Port which is under the Sri Lanka Ports Authority in collaboration with the Government of India. We hope to restore the breakwater and to build a terminal to dock large vessels”, Minister of Ports and Shipping, Rohitha Abeygunawardena said.

“We hope to discuss in the future with India on the resumption of passenger ferries and implement it considering the security aspects of both countries”, he added.
