Penal code fines to be revised: Joint Cabinet Spokesperson

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal from Minister of Justice - Ali Sabry to revise the fines in the penal code, Joint Cabinet Spokesperson revealed on Tuesday (Dec. 15). The proposal was submitted by the Justice Minister, based on the recommendations of the Judicial Service Commission to revise the fines under the penal code, Joint Cabinet Spokesperson - Udaya Gammanpila told the Cabinet Media Briefing on Tuesday afternoon. The fines should prevent the people from attempting to commit any offences and influence the people to abide by the law through the fear of having to pay fines, he said. According to Gammanpila, the rate of fines not being revised in accordance with the country's inflation has resulted in a system where the people are not scared to abide by the law.
