Expert committee on Kandy tremors to convene next week

COLOMBO (News 1st): The Expert Committee appointed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the tremors in Digana, Kandy is scheduled to convene next week, for the first time, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau said on Saturday (Dec. 12). The 11-member committee of experts is chaired by the Chairman of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Anura Walpola. Other members of the committee are, Prof. Athula Senaratne, Major General S. Ranasinghe, Wasantha Ihalapitiya, Prof. Jagath Goonetileke, Prof. RK Perera, Dr. O.K. Dissanayake, Nalin de Silva, Dr. Gamini Jayatissa, Mahinda Seneviratne, and Nilmini Thaldena. The committee is tasked with the aim of discovering the cause for the tremors. In addition, the committee is tasked with preparing recommendations on minimizing the potential damage, in the event of tremors with a magnitude that may cause damage, in the future. The committee was appointed by the Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Anil Jasinghe on the instructions of the Subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera.
