COLOMBO (News1st): Last year’s April 21 attacks had been orchestrated under the eyes of an international terrorist group, a former navy commander has said.

Local intelligence units had weakened under the previous government, Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, a former chief of defence staff told the presidential commission of inquiry probing the attacks.

He claimed that he had been imprisoned due to his attempts to protect the integrity of the intelligence units.

Wijegunaratne told investigators he believed that the ISIS terrorist group was behind the attacks and that it is the first time in which six coordinated explosions had been carried out in the country.

The witness said it is shameful that Sri Lanka that lectured the world on terrorism had to be informed of a terrorist attack on its own soil from foreign sources.
