Police to call for expert report on medication at Mahara Prison Infirmary

Colombo (News 1st);  Sri Lanka Police said an expert medical report will be called for with regard to the pills which were stored at the Mahara Prison infirmary.

This is to reach a definite conclusion as to whether the pills caused the prison inmates at the Mahara Prison to behave aggressively, which resulted in a riot on Sunday, the 29th of November.

Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said the Criminal Investigations Department is currently probing the use of the relevant pills.

The Special Team appointed to investigate the Mahara Prison Riots recorded 30 statements on Thursday (03), and these statements are from 13 Prison Officers, 12 Inmates, 01 Doctor, and 04 Male Nurses.

In total, statements were recorded from 56 people by the Criminal Investigations Department.

Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana speaking to News 1st said the infirmary of the Mahara Prison was broken during the riot and the inmates had consumed some medication.

The samples from the infirmary will be sent to drug experts, for an expert opinion on the conduct of the Mahara Prisoners, he said.
