Protest against the demolition of a clock tower in Pilimathalawa

COLOMBO (News 1st): A group of members of the Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha protested against the demolition of a clock tower in Pilimatalawa today(21). The clock tower was constructed in 1992 to commemorate the opening of a garment factory by the late Ranasinghe Premadasa. Opposition Members of the Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha allege that it has been destroyed last night. "Just because you have power don't abuse it. Restore this clock tower back in this location. We saw the destroyed King's Assembly Hall in Kurunegala", Champika Nilantha the Opposition Leader of the Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha. Clarifying facts, Amila Weragoda, Chairman of the Kadugannawa Urban Council said, steps were taken to remove the clock tower to construct a sidewalk and to erect traffic signals. The Chairman further said approval of all members of the Urban Council was obtained to make the decision.
