Colombo (News 1st); The Russian Airline Crew Member had tested negative to COVID-19 following a PCR test carried out after he was admitted to the Hambantota Hospital, for having tested positive for COVID-19 earlier.

However, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera speaking to reporters on Friday (25) said all preventive measures arein place and continuous PCR testing will be carried out in the area where the Russia was staying in Matara.

He said the Russian and hotel staff had failed to follow the strict health guidelines to prevent COVID-19.

All contacts including the families of the staff of the hotel, where the Russian was in quarantine have been traced and placed under strict quarantine and PCR tests are being carried out, said Dr. Samaraweera.

"Anyone who comes to hospital with symptoms similar to those of COVID-19, their samples would be obtained for immediate PCR testing. In addition, if a sudden death occurs, samples would be obtained for PCR testing as well," stressed the Chief Epidemiologist.

Speaking on the hotel in Matara, where the Russian was staying, Dr. Samaraweera said the Health Officials and the Military were not informed about the quarantine facility which was maintained in an unofficial manner and with very low COVID-19 preventative measures.

He said when the authorities were notified of the incident, immediate preventative measures were put in place.
