COLOMBO (News1st): Residents of Egoda Uyana in Moratuwa staged a protest on Thursday demanding the construction of a drainage system to drain water during the rainy season. Protestors claimed that officials have turned a blind eye towards this issue for the last 15 years. "There is no way for the water to flow from this place. Therefore, the road becomes inundated," one protestor pointed out during the protest that lasted for about an hour. Another protestor pointed out that children are experiencing difficulties in going to school due to this situation. "They (the councillors) have been elected to the municipal council to work for us. They must resign if they can’t do that," an area resident said adding that funds for the project were approved months ago. Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando told News 1st that the construction of the drainage system would commence after rains subside by next week. "We have allocated 2 million to build a drainage system," Fernando said.
