COLOMBO (News1st): A school student has been hospitalized after being assaulted by the police over false suspicion, drawing an apology from the law enforcement unit.

The student had been arrested with his cousin in Kamburupitiya for allegedly stealing a mobile phone, and had claimed to have been beaten by the police.

“I then told the police officer to examine CCTV footage. He hit me by saying that I am being arrogant,” the student told News 1st.

“After examining the CCTV footage they (the police) told us to leave stating that we had not done anything wrong”.

The police had visited the home of the student after the parents had inquired about the incident.

“The police officer admitted his mistake,” the victim’s mother said. “However, what happens to the injustice faced by my child?”.

Police spokesman Jaliya Senaratne said an investigation is being carried out into the incident.

Meanwhile, a woman and her father have been assaulted after filing a complaint with the police over a recent attack on her in Ja-Ela.

“…they bashed my head after grabbing a helmet from my sister. I then fell unconscious,” the woman said.
