COLOMBO (News1st): The job appointments of nearly 10,000 graduates have been cancelled without a valid reason, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa said on Friday.

Raising questions in parliament, Premadasa said that these graduates had been deprived of appointments due to their contributions to the Employees Provident Fund.

"...it can be clearly observed that the government has deceived them," the opposition leader remarked.

He recalled that the government had issued letters inviting the graduates for training before the election, and has not given them a chance to work after the poll.

"Will the government provide jobs to these graduates who faced injustice?," Premadasa queried.

Dinesh Gunawardena, Leader of the House, said the government had received 91,764 job applications from unemployed graduates.

"Among them, we have identified 59,556 as eligible individuals," he noted.

Gunawardena said that graduates with foreign degrees or degrees from private universities can file appeals if their applications have been rejected.
