STF protection to be provided to additional prisons; State Minister of Prisons

Colombo (News 1st); The State Ministry of Prisons and Rehabilitation said Police Special Task Force protection will be added to several more prisons in the country.

At present, Police STF is only deployed for security at the Welikada, Colombo Remand, and Magazine prisons, said State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle.

Accordingly, STF officers will be deployed to the Kalutara, Negombo and several other prisons and a request is to be forwarded to the Acting Inspector General of Police.

A program is also in place to reduce congestion across prisons in the country, said the State Minister.

She said the process of obtaining the Attorney General's advice with regard to granting bail to suspects in remand custody will be expedited.

Further, dangerous criminals will be moved to the dedicated facility at the Boossa Naval Complex.
