82 arrested on Wednesday for election law violations: SL Police

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Police arrested 82 people on Wednesday (Aug 5) over violations of the election law, during the voting process of the 2020 Parliamentary Election, Police said on Thursday (Aug 6).  The arrests were made following investigations conducted into 72 complaints received over the violation of the election law, Senior DIG (Elections) Priyantha Weerasuriya said on Thursday (Aug 6). According to DIG Weerasuriya, a total of 550 people were arrested for election law violations during the election period. Senior DIG Weerasuriya further said a special security program was implemented to ensure security surrounding counting centres, adding the Police Special Task Force was also deployed. Around 70,000 police officers, STF and mobile patrols continue to remain deployed across the island to ensure security during the counting process.
