COLOMBO (News 1st): More than 13,575 private-sector employees in Sri Lanka have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Department of Labour. "Employees at around 546 factories have been affected as a result, and the department has received complaints regarding 381 factories affected by wage issues including the non-payment of salaries; more than 2700 workers are employed at these factories," Milanga Weerakkody, the Commissioner of Labour said on Friday (July 10). According to the Department of Labour, following discussions held with employers and employees over the complaints, the department had managed to re-employ 782 workers who lost their jobs Furthermore, the department has received many complaints from the private sector employees due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Thee department will address these issues and provide solutions immediately," Milanga Weerakkody noted.
