COLOMBO (News1st) : A former minister has said that the 19th constitutional amendment must not be changed, amidst strong resistance from the current government. "We have created a rigid democratic structure through the 19th amedment," Wajira Abeywardana, a United National Party (UNP) parliamentary election candidate said. He added that the current government will not win a parliamentary majority at the August 5 parliamentary election, to amend the constitution as planned. "Even if we lose, a government can be established based on a majority approval," Abeywardana noted. He recalled that it was in this manner that the former government, in which he was minister, had formed an administration despite winning only 40 seats out of 225.
