COVID-19 quarantine regulations still in place, violators will be dealt with legal action: SSP Senaratne

COLOMBO (News 1st): Those who violate quarantine regulations will be dealt under the Penal Code or the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance of Sri Lanka, Police Spokesperson said on Saturday (July 4). "All regulations put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are still in effect and based on guidelines issued by health authorities, the general public must comply with social distancing guidelines such as wearing of face masks in public places," SSP Jaliya Senaratne, the Police Spokesperson emphasized. According to SSP Senaratne, Sri Lanka Police have received instructions to strictly advise those who fail to comply with health guidelines including wearing of face masks, and they will not be arrested at the moment. However, those who fail to comply with the instructions upon being advised, will be dealt with under the Penal Code or the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance of Sri Lanka, according to SSP Senaratne. Meanwhile, Chairman of the National Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya also commented on the importance of following health instructions to contain COVID-19. "We don't believe there will be a second wave of COVID-19, but to hold the General Election, we must adhere to all health guidelines. These include wearing face masks, washing hands and maintaining social distancing guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Prevention is our best option," Mahinda Deshapriya emphasized.
