Intelligence Security Unit established to address shortcomings at Prisons

COLOMBO (News 1st): An Intelligence Security Unit has been established to address the irregularities and other shortcomings in prisons, said Thushara Upuldeniya - the Acting Commissioner General of Prisons. "Issues regarding prison officials and inmates can be directed to the Unit via the hotline, 011 267 8600," Upuldeniya told reporters on Tuesday (June 16). Upuldeniya emphasized that 100% confidentiality will be maintained concerning the provided information. Meanwhile, a program to provide employment opportunities to inmates has also been launched, according to Chandana Ekanayake - the Commissioner of Rehabilitation and Skills Development. Recently, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, during a meeting with senior prison officials, stressed the need to end crimes operated by high profile criminals from prisons.
