India has registered 2,000 deaths in the last 24 hours taking the death toll from the disease to 11,903.
The country has confirmed more than 354,000 infections, making it the fourth-highest in the world.
India has opened up businesses, public transport and shopping malls to resuscitate a battered economy but the ending of the nearly 70-day lockdown has come just as cases are rising at their fastest daily levels.
Experts express concern over the accuracy of infection and death data in India as testing capacity remains limited.
