COLOMBO (News 1st): A Penumbral Lunar Eclipse will be visible over the Sri Lankan sky tonight. The eclipse will start at 11:15 pm tonight and will last until 2:34 am the next day. It is expected to peak at 12:56 am tonight. A penumbral lunar eclipse takes place when the sun, the earth and the moon, are positioned in a straight line causing the earth to cast a shadow on the moon. However, a penumbral lunar eclipse does not cover the moon completely. Instead, the Earth blocks some of the Sun's light from directly reaching the Moon's surface and covers all or part of the Moon with the outer part of its shadow, also known as the penumbra.
