'The country cannot be reopened simply due to the demands of certain politicians' - DG of Health Services

Colombo (News 1st): Speaking regarding the matter of conducting an election amid COVID-19, SLPP candidate Keheliya Rambukwella said the Director-General or Health Services Specialist Dr.Anil Jasinghe had admitted the country possesses a suitable environment to hold an election. "While health authorities very clearly state that it is safe to hold the Election now, the lawyers representing the National Elections Commission are asking for 75 days to hold the election. But the ulterior motive of all these requests is to postpone the election", Keheliya Rambukwella said. He further claimed that these actions have given rise to suspicions regarding the independence of institutions such as the NEC. Meanwhile, Director General or Health Services Specialist Dr.Anil Jasinghe, speaking on a program broadcast on Sri Lanka Rupavahini claimed that he had noted election affairs would be able to move forward only after examining its possibility on a scientific basis. Speaking further he added, " I do not say the virus is fully controlled. But one thing I am sure of is that, if we continue to act in this way, we will be able to control it better than most other countries". The DG of Health Services also stressed that the country cannot be reopened simply due to the demands made by certain politicians.
